In a flash

I got bored after not taking any photos in a few days.

My good friend Steven Hopkins showed me a video where a guy used long exposures to capture trails of bugs at night. I tried to do something similar and failed, so I did this instead. Not nearly as interesting, but fun nonetheless.

At first, I was trying to get a shot of just what you see around me. I thought it was a funny slice of Americana and I also liked the odd colors from the street lamp and porch light. I thought I would do a little light painting with my strobe over some long exposures. When my sister, Kerby, got tired of helping me, – or my bossiness – I had to find something else.

  1. I thought you were a bolt of lightning at first. Maybe you are.

  2. Haha. I like the fact that the light didn’t really catch my legs, so it looks like I’m jumping a lot higher than I am.

  3. Pretty funky this dude, try painting your subjects from behind the camera so you dont get flares and even balanced lighting.

  4. Thanks for the advice, but my goal is rarely to get balanced lighting. And my “subject” here was me… I was holding the flash to give it this effect.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of backlighting. That’s what’s great about photography. Not one style is necessarily best, or correct.

  5. No I agree, I wasnt criticising!

  6. Very nice photo Zach… I’m with Stephen Hopkins, I thought you were a bolt of lightning or maybe some weird exposure thing… Very nice. I like it a lot. You are so talented…
